Maslanka（1943-2017）は、特に吹奏楽作品で世界的に名が知られており、吹奏楽編成では8曲の長大な交響曲を含む約50曲もの作品がある。またその他には声楽、ピアノ、管弦打楽器の独奏曲や室内楽曲、オーケストラ作品と実に幅広い編成で曲を残し、作品総数は140曲以上にのぼる。中でもサクソフォーンのための楽曲は、独奏曲、四重奏曲、協奏曲、チェロやマリンバとの室内楽曲など様々な編成で14曲あり、サクソフォーン奏者たちにとって重要なレパートリーの一つとなっている。\n本稿は、彼がサクソフォーン奏者たちにどのように知られ委嘱されるようになったのか、そしてどのように受容されて今日に至るのか、その全体像を把握することを目的とした。\n方法は、第一に彼の作品全体の受容の様を考察するため、ディスコグラフィ作成によって量的な分析を、CD批評によって質的な分析を行った。第二にサクソフォーン作品に注目し、特に初期の作品の成立情報から委嘱や初演の実態を把握した。また、四重奏のための作品に注目し、Fischoff National Chamber Music Competitionでの演奏実態から考察した。\nこの結果、ディスコグラフィの作成によりマスランカ作品を含む198のCD、LPの存在が確認できた。またその内訳から、マスランカ作品が世に知られる基盤となったのは吹奏楽作品であると言えるとともに、吹奏楽を通してアメリカだけではなく日本、ヨーロッパへと広がりを見せていた様がうかがえた。吹奏楽の演奏団体の大半がアメリカの大学であったことから、アメリカの大学を中心とした吹奏楽のフィールドから年を経るごとに様々な学校団体、国などへ伝播していったと言える。\n次にCD批評から、マスランカは1982年の«A Child’s Garden of Dreams»の発表が契機となり、1990年にモンタナに移住しフリーランスの作曲家に転身したことも相まって徐々に知られていき、2000年代にはアメリカの吹奏楽作曲家として受容されたことがわかった。また、2000年代のアメリカでは彼の吹奏楽作品がオーケストラに匹敵する作品として評価されていたこと、吹奏楽のレパートリーとして確立し、多くの演奏団体に演奏されるようになっていたことが読み取れた。\nサクソフォーン作品に関しては、ディスコグラフィ及び初演情報、Fischoff National Chamber Music Competitionにおける演奏実態から、1981年から時を経て、四重奏作品«Recitation Book»が書かれた2006年以降にはサクソフォーンのレパートリーとして奏者たちに浸透してきたことがわかった。またCD批評より、2019年にはマスランカの作品が広く演奏されている事実が確認できた。\n受容の考察を通して、マスランカと深く関わり、受容の一端を担った奏者の存在が浮かび上がってきた。吹奏楽ではイリノイ州立大学と指揮者のStephen
