An overview of the period from 1910 to 1991 shows how the theatre’s repertoire frequently changed in response to various situations. The shift observed from 1935 to 1936 in particular marked a major turning point, with two critiques in Pravda (the Communist Party’s official newspaper), especially of Shostakovich’s Lady Macbeth of Mtsensk District at the Bolshoi Theatre as a direct trigger.
