| 内容記述 | An important aspect of Italian auteur Liliana Cavani’s cinema is undoubtedly her relationship with Japan, a country whose cultural expressions bear a certain relevance in at least two of the eclectic director’s films: Interno berlinese (literally “Berlin Interior”, translated as The Berlin Affair, 1985), loosely based on Japanese writer Tanizaki Jun’ichirō’s controversial novel Manji (literally “The Buddhist Cross”, translated as Quicksand, 1928-30), and Dove siete? Io sono qui (Where Are You? I Am Here), released in 1993, a peculiar work where deafness is associated to the world of ankoku butō, the enigmatic Japanese dance theatre. This paper proposes an analysis of aspects that have not been properly investigated by studies on Cavani’s cinema so far, in an attempt to understand how Japan, with its various artistic expressions, found representation in the iconic filmmaker’s oeuvre. | |||||||||
